Capital Cities animated album art

Capital Cities played at our 2015 Dreamforce Design Party! I was asked to animate their, 'In a Tidal Wave of Mystery' album art so it can be projected in the back of them while they played. So I put this together a couple of days prior to them playing.

I didn't have the album to scan, so I turned to Google to find high-resolution images. I had to repaint the space background and cut everything out of the scene into a PSD. Then I imported the PSD layers into After Effects.

Having planned this out beforehand, I wanted to slowly pan across the scene using the final video height of 720px as a restraint, so I made the PSD canvas twice as tall (1440px). The only things left were to put the objects in place, add particle effects to certain pieces of the scene e.g. the background stars, the volcano, and the exploding moon, and to animate and blur assets on enter/exit of the frame.

I exported three GIF's for the dribbble shot, but this is the full 7-minute movie loop that played behind them while they played for us!

If you enjoy this, like it on dribbble!
